Therapeutic Approach
Sonya envisions psychotherapy as a journey embarked on by therapist and client in which she will walk alongside you to guide and support you in the pursuit of your treatment goals and whole-person wellness.
Along the way, I will help you examine how your life experiences and mental health symptoms may be interfering with your ability to live an authentic life that feels fulfilling and connected with your values.
I am dedicated to partnering with you in a manner that feels comfortable and helpful to you, as I believe that goodness of fit is essential for therapy to be truly effective.
I approach my work with all of my clients with trauma-informed care and attachment theory in mind. I specialize in treating anxiety disorders, eating disorders, depression, and trauma/PTSD. I am skilled in helping clients who are struggling with relationship difficulties, life transitions, identity and self-esteem concerns, and substance use.
I am committed to being an inclusive, affirming therapist and I welcome working with people of all cultures, identities, and beliefs.
In all areas of my life, I strive to approach my interactions with others with unconditional positive regard. Unconditional positive regard, pioneered by Carl Rogers, is a guiding, central value for me.
A definition of unconditional positive regard that resonates for me is a belief that every human being is worthy of respect, is lovable, has their own free will, and are doing the best they can at any given moment.
